The adaptive image module maintainer appears to have abandoned the module. It is listed as having 150 active installs. This module is useful for any site that displays images on small screens like mobile devices. 

A bug causing a 500 internal server error was reported in 2016. A fix was proposed in Jan 2023. A second readme file bug had a patch submitted in Dec 2016. Both of these bugs remain in the release. 

As a user of this module I could become the maintainer. How does one become a maintainer for this module?

I can confirm that the listed maintainer of that module has not been active for a long time.

There are three steps to becoming a maintainer of a project or adopting an abandoned module: 

  1. Join the Contrib Group for BackdropCMS on Github. Information on joining the contrib group can be found here: https://github.com/backdrop-ops/contrib
     
  2. Submit a PR adding yourself as the maintainer.
     
  3. Following the rest of the steps found here: https://docs.backdropcms.org/documentation/abandoned-projects#adoption
