I don't think there is currently a way to set back references in bulk for existing books that already reference an author... I believe you can do this with CER through the UI...

I also found the contextual filter area in the view for this block. But that’s where it stops. I'll try my best - views based on entity reference can be a challenge....

Seems like this might be a good thing to discuss in the next dev meeting, if the issue has not been resolved that time.
I'd love to be there for the dev meeting, but will unfortunately be traveling then. ( I can watch the recording afterward.) But it would be helpful to get comments in the issue queue.
