Due to being a local council member in Ede, The Netherlands, from Spring 2022 till Spring 2026, I haven't been active on this forum for several years. But at this moment I'm involved in the relaunch of a longstanding local group blog as a local news website: Ededorp.
The site has been around for eight years, running on Wordpress (Nikko theme) and for the relaunch we swithed to the Blogsy theme.
But already on my first day as an editor of this site, I ran up against the inflexibilities of Wordpress. So I would very much like to give the website a new life in BackdropCMS.
There must be several (local) news websites running on BackdropCMS, but on the showcase pages I couldn't find any examples.
Any link to a Backdrop-driven news website would be helpful to learn by example.

The answer is off topic, but I'll add a little.
1. Backend. Why you don't need links to other websites: Since you know the structure of your site and content, you can decide for yourself (if you haven't worked with Drupal and BackdropCMS before, create your own BackdropCMS test platform) whether BackdropCMS is right for you. No examples are needed for this.
I have created 100+ different, mostly small, websites using Drupal and BackdropCMS, and I can say that BackdropCMS is 99% suitable for everything, especially for a content site, except for e-commerce (modern online stores).
A very flexible system – Content Types, Fields, Taxonomy, Views – it has everything you need to create a powerful and user-friendly content base, even without installing additional modules. I won't mention less important features like Comments or various Content Rating Systems, but that can be done by installing Disqus.
2. Frontend. Why you don't need links to other websites: with the BackdropCMS Layouts, Blocks, and Views system, displaying content on any website page, in any area, is very quick and easy. You can use any news website as a layout and design example and copy these ideas to your own website, styling it in your own style and embedding any of your content. Naturally, you'll also need to know CSS and JS.
Bottom line: I don't think there are many great websites built with BackdropCMS, but in my opinion, it doesn't matter because you can do anything you want with the power of the backend and the ability to create any frontend you like with BackdropCMS.
Screenshot: This is a real layout based on BackdropCMS — you can create any design and arrange the blocks however you like. That's why you don't need links to other websites...
Funnily we launched a new Dutch website this very week, milieucafe.nl
It is not a 'news' website but operates in the context of local government. The layout focuses on content instead of eye candy and swiping was not the first priority :)
