Am I overlooking something?
Is there a way to send out newsletters from backdrop - and of course a form for interested folks to sign up?
We send out monthly newsletters (simplenews module) from our D7 site, so this is needed if (when) converting our site to backdrop.
Simplenews has been ported, but it doesn't look like it's working at the moment: https://github.com/backdrop-contrib/simplenews
Someone expressed interest in Gitter only yesterday in finishing the port as they need it for one of their clients, so it may be receiving some updates very soon.

AltaGrade team is working on getting Simplenews work on Backdrop. Hopefully we will roll out the official release in a matter of couple more days. I will follow up here when it's ready.

Today, we've finished porting the module, which is now available on https://github.com/altagrade/simplenews for now, because according to the procedure outlined on https://backdropcms.org/user-guide/adopt-project we can't upload it to https://github.com/backdrop-contrib/simplenews for two more weeks. Unless, the current maintainer responds to https://github.com/backdrop-contrib/simplenews/issues/1.
Feel free to start testing the module and reporting issues on https://github.com/altagrade/simplenews until eventually we get it to https://github.com/backdrop-contrib/simplenews
This is just to let you know the module has been moved to https://github.com/backdrop-contrib/simplenews
