Can I disable URL Aliases for a content type? If I leave the pattern blank, it inherits the default pattern. I can uncheck the "Generate automatic URL alias" checkbox on a specific node, but I'm looking to permanently default that setting to off.

You could create a pattern of:

node/[node:nid]

That will do the same as turning the patterns off
