Glad you got things working. If you decide to try Login Destination again, please post an issue in the issue queue with details if you have any trouble. With the latest release I'm not seeing any problems on the sites that I'm using it on.

@barney are you using Login Destination? If so, are you on the latest version? (What you describe sounds like an issue I fixed within the last month or so after I took over maintainership).
Thanks for coming back to me. I have tried Login Destination but whenever I try to set a new rule I get this error
Notice: Undefined index: destination in /home/tredegar/public_html/core/includes/bootstrap.inc on line 3214
That's why I switched to Rules, but it fails there also
