I have a page that is created by a layout so is not a basic page or an article. I create dit by creating a custom layout, defined the blocks and set the path.

Works as intended.

But how can I create a name=description meta tag for that page? I'm using the metatag module.

Layout is not Content, it is not used to create pages, so I think you have chosen the wrong way. To avoid problems, just need to use every tool for its own purpose. This is not a direct answer, but still...

I played around with metatags  and when i revisited those pages they now have description metatags. Not sure what the initial problems were though. Sorry for the time waste.

Here’s an improved version of the reply including SEO keywords (meta description, SEO, page layout, HTML head tags, etc.) while keeping it professional and relevant:

If your page is generated from a shared layout, the meta description is probably coming from the layout’s default settings. To apply SEO-friendly meta tags on a specific page, you’ll need to ensure the layout includes a section or placeholder that allows overriding the HTML head tags.

In most frameworks, this can be done by:

  • Adding a dedicated section in the layout for meta description and SEO keywords
  • Overriding that section in the individual page so you can define page-specific SEO content, including a unique description and relevant keywords
  • Ensuring the layout uses the page-level values when provided, and falls back to defaults when not

If you can share the framework or a snippet of your layout code, I can help you structure the meta description and SEO keywords more precisely.
