I’ve tried Manual Crop which was always my goto in D7, but it doesn’t load the editing overlay and only saves the crop if the auto-crop option is switched on.
So I tried Focal Point. The test drive works fine, but again there’s no overlay (ie crosshairs) on my uploaded image and nothing gets saved.
- Warning: Undefined array key "#file" in focal_point_preprocess_image_widget() (line 271 of /public_html/modules/focal_point/focal_point.module).
- Warning: Attempt to read property "fid" on null in focal_point_preprocess_image_widget() (line 271 of /public_html/modules/focal_point/focal_point.module).
I’ve switched off Devel (which I was using for theme debug) and I’m using Basis for the admin theme.
I’m using Safari on macOS 27, but I’ve also tried Firefox with the same result.
Any suggestions on how to see what’s going on here?

Hi Jim,
sounds strange... I'm successfully using Focal Point. But I don't have macOS.
Just to make sure, the crosshair doesn't show in the preview dialog, but directly on the thumbnail (whatever image style you chose for the image display in form).
If it's not there for you, eventually some JavaScript errors show up in your browser's dev tool? Possibly an (otherwise unrelated) module interferes?
Here’s the edit screen with the Focal Point instructions below:
If I click on the Preview link, I get this:
And no errors in the console.
I’ve just set up a clean install in MAMP and Focal Point works fine. *sighs
So the implication is that another module is causing the trouble. Now for the slow process of elimination...
Sounds plausible. And good luck with digging...
