Whenever I paste embedded code for an external photo gallery, the page only shows about 1" of the photos. I've tried using different templates and adjusting the style. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

Hmm... hard to tell. I don't see any module there that modifies the Backdrop routes for node editing etc.
Can you check if you can still edit notes? For example by going to node/NODE_ID/...

Some more details might help to understand, what you're after.
Flickr is the external gallery. I input the album code into Flickrembed and it creates the code. I then put that into a Custom Block in a layout.
