Is it possible to add a screenshot to a contrib theme or module. I thought we had done work on this, but I'm not finding documentation on it or even confirmation that it is possible.
You can edit images and load them back to the same folder with the same name and extension, this will not create a problem. Replace directly in the file system, without the use of CMS, for CMS...
I was under the impression you could not do that - don't know where I got that idea from... thought it had to do with the way Backdrop manages image files.

I don't think, there's any official documentation or policy regarding screenshots.
Which means: you can do what you want. :-)
Probably a custom directory and then add the screenshots with full url to your README?
