Regarding #4285 (flushing the core directory instead of merging on self-update).
@quicksketch I have no idea, how to test your PR. We really need to test it.
It seems spooky to delete the directory, the currently running code (and its includes) are in. ;-)
Regarding the current solution by @quicksketch for #5482 - both @docwilmot and I have left a couple of thoughts. Perhaps it'd be good to discuss the current approach and alternatives.
